My Bedroom.
First of all: thank you so much for all the birthday wishes from everyone! I read every single comment and email, and each one was so wonderful. It was great getting to know some of you a little better, too!
Do you ever have house-envy?
Sometimes it feels like everyone around me has all the money in the world to fix up their homes.
On the other hand, it thrills me to pieces when I am able to use creativity rather than the VISA to make something beautiful!
With that in mind, I thought I would share the one room that I have officially finished (ha!) decorating. And I have to say, I am pretty proud of myself! Everything I used was on-hand except a $6 mirror, and a $.10 tin sailboat that I got a couple of weeks ago.
A $6.10 room makeover? That I can afford! So here we go....
*Sorry that these photos are a little on the blurry side-one of these days I'll get a tripod!*
This room was plain white when we moved in, with a lovely '80's carpet. Some of the members of the church selflessly took up the carpeting to reveal this gorgeous wood flooring-my favorite part of the house! We haven't gotten the trim back on yet, but that's ok!
This wall has just a couple of old frames with no glass that I spray painted. The "P" usually hangs on Paige's stocking at Christmas time, and the background paper is torn from an old book.
An unused shelf from the craft room becomes a shoe organizer/bench! One of these days I'll make a real cushion, but until then? Throw pillows!
I love shoes....
This bedspread was a $20 Sears clearance purchase from last year. Probably one of my favorite purchases ever!
And yes, those are cinderblocks holding up my bed. (Should have pulled the covers down further!)
A very inexpensive alternative when you can't get a bedframe, and very sturdy!
Oh, and our headboard? An old desk top that a previous owner left in the basement.
"And...are those sheets you're using as curtains??"
Why, yes they are.....but....they have fancy ribbon ties! :o)
This dresser was abandoned, and my sister rescued it for me! Unfortunately it was covered in green oil paint. Have you ever tried to sand off oil pant? Evil. But it was worth it to cover it with this beautiful black! I covered a thrift store mirror to make it "match".
With all of my favorite things on top of it!
All thrifted or gifted (There's my sailboat!)-who gets rid of these things??
I used a frame as a tray to hold all the goodies.
This is a vintage dresser that I'm "borrowing" from my parents. They've had it stored in our huge basement, and I realized the other day that I had no business NOT using it in my room. It's gorgeous!
I nailed up some random vintage pictures that I've been holding onto for a while, and stacked up the very old books I rescued from a "throw away" box at church. (*gah!*)
These vintage hats were a gift from a reader! She saw them at a yard sale and thought of me. Isn't that incredible? You all never cease to amaze me with their sweetness.
Next to the dresser is a little writing desk with an old wooden chair.
I really love the look of different types of wood paired together. It feels really cozy, and makes everything look so interesting!
The desk holds another vintage, glassless frame with the original hanging wire on it. I used it to string up some of my necklaces!
I love seeing the pearls all together like that. Pearls make me really happy.
Here's my $6 Mirror!
I was drooling over similar versions in stores that were almost $100!
The closet had wooden sliding doors on it when we moved in, and I didn't care for them, so I put up some charcoal grey curtains. Now I can see all my clothes at once!
It feels so good to have one room finished!
And I know what you're thinking: "Aren't you married? How did you get your husband to allow such girly vintageness?". I'm not sure. He's just really nice like that! He even put all of his clothes in a room downstairs so that I could have the whole closet to myself. That. is love!
Isn't it fun to shop your own house for decorations? I love the challenge of seeing things in a new light! I guess I've never thought much about it, but creativity is a very economical quality!
Happy decorating!!

Wow! This is amazing -a complete room for just $6.10. Such an inspiration!!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny that you mention that your husband keeps his clothes in a separate closet so you get one all to yourself. When my husband and I first got married, he gave me the big closet in our room and his is in the office. That IS love! :)
ReplyDeleteKind Regards,
Nicole
Vintage. Eclectic. Cozy. That's how I'd describe your style! I love it! Especially the fact that you hardly spent anything on it! I've been racking my brain for ideas to re-do my master bedroom as well-now you've completely inspired me to do it without spending anything. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteNow can you show the rest of your rooms, too? :-)

That is soo sweet of your husband! You are truly lucky! I love the little touches in your room. Glad it isn't cluttered. Open space and keeping it simple is sweet :)
ReplyDeleteI love it!!!! And whata sweet husband!;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love the way the light pours into the pictures. And I'm so envious of those gorgeous hats!! I have a couple of my grandmother's hats that I found in a bag of dress-up clothes my mom recently gave to me. I think I'm going to have to use them for decorating. And I love the way you used the frame to hold your necklaces. So pretty.
ReplyDeletewow, this is fantastic! I really appreciate this post :) as a newly married college student, I can sympathize with not being to buy nice things to fancy up our apartment but wanting to make it look nice all the same! little things like sheets for curtains or homemade decorations go a long way to making an apartment a home :) thanks for some more inspiration!
ReplyDeleteCan your husband have a talk with mine> lol. Mine still wants to decorate with rock band posters. :P
ReplyDeleteI had only just finished reading your blog, and was great to finish with a new post! haha
ReplyDeleteI brought the jewellery supplies to make the lovely Anthro-inspired necklace you have on your blog. You are right, so easy and so effective! I'm going to complete the d-ring belt next.
Thanks for being a wonderful inspriation!
What a gorgeous room---it just screams Disney. Whenever I'm walking about I can't resist peeking into people's windows, so this post was such fun to read.

Such a wonderful room, you have decorated so good.but i feel one thing...you didn't add red color in your room!!!!whats the reason???any flowers or painting something...don't you like red color??
ReplyDeletewowwowwow!
ReplyDeleteyou are amazing!!!
Love it! I love how it's not so perfect that I feel threatened by it... it still has cinder blocks under the bed and missing floorboards which makes it lived in and real! Not some magazine room that's so perfect it makes me want to cry. Your room is do-able!
ReplyDeleteI love the throw pillows on the bench, I imagine they are annoying to keep ON the bench but I think they add a lot of character.
Love it!!!! I absolutely adore the pillows on the bench. I wish my mind was half as creative as yours.
ReplyDeleteamazing! i love your sense of style. :)
ReplyDeletei did a post similar to this one a few days ago on my blog, too...
only, i think your bedroom looks way cooler. i've got to paint my walls and do a little more decorating i think...
thanks for the inspiration,
lora
I can't get the comments to work on your birthday post (I think it's my computer not you) So I'll comment my comment here if you don't mind. :)
ReplyDelete---
Something about me?
I totally shut down if my husband criticizes my writing.
I won't even finish what it is I wrote... EVER. I've tried to overcome this but it's really hard. I think he's figured it out too because he usually only encourages me anymore.
Happy Birthday! 25 did you say? (where did I read that?)
That's a good year. Now as for me... I'll be 30 in September and I can barely come to terms with the idea. I was just getting used to my twenties!
very very pretty. :) And sheets as curtains are the best!!
ReplyDeleteDisney, I just love the picture frame with the necklaces hanging from wire...what a nice touch to a beautiful room!
ReplyDeletei LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing....you've done a wonderful job on a budget!! I'm still drooling over that damask print bedspread for $20!!! Are you kidding me!! I so want it ;)
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you!
I love your bedroom. I think I'd feel right at home there! :)
ReplyDeleteCute! I was going to ask how you got your husband to let you have something so girly. If you figure it out, let me know b/c mine won't let me have such girliness in our bedroom (it's reserved for my craft room only, which I painted lavender).
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your room! I especially love your writing desk with the necklace hung in the frame, and those cute vintage touches! So beatiful! And yes, your husband is a sweety to let you decorate so girly...I was lucky to get pink sheets recently! lol

ReplyDeleteThe floors are beautiful, I can't believe they were covered up with carpet.
ReplyDeleteWow, you are so creative! I love your room.
ReplyDeleteI would have to say $6.10 is a pretty good deal.
Have a wonderful afternoon
♥Michelle
wow in this bedroom you will feel like a prinsess!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove Miranda
great bedroom!
ReplyDeleteas for tripods, several years ago we got one online--only $10, but its been great!
Just wanted to let you know I added you to my list of favorite blogs. :)
ReplyDeletehahaha, you're so lucky! I have to sneak my 3 dresses into our HUGE WALK-IN closest and even then my fiance has a fit. lol.
ReplyDeleteVery nice, and all for $6.10! We are re-doing our home right now, while it is costing slightly more than $6.10, it is money saved and earned from odds and end jobs and scrimping and saving. One of our biggest feats so far, is redoing our ceiling. Our creative fix, as an alternative to removing and rehanging drywall...... are you ready???? MOBILE HOME SKIRTING! He he he.... And the best part, I totally LOVE it. It may not be everyone's style. But it combined with newly painted white paneling, and weathered glass green painted cabinets - all screams beachside cottage! Besides paint and ceiling, everything else is salvaged from other rooms in the house, old items form mother-in-law and family hand-me-downs. Love your blog - thanks for the insights in to your life!
ReplyDeleteDisney that is amazing! I love it. I am also working on my bedroom. Wanting to do a beach theme. I will let you know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteWow. The floors are simply gorgeous!!! Loving the bedding too.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute room! It is so... ruffles and stuff!! I really like it, very girly, vintage, chic, romantic, dreaming...a great room!
ReplyDeletei love your style. you've blended everything into a very peaceful and soothing room. i like to use sheets, too; so much yardage for not much money new, even better if you find like-new ones at a thrift store or yard sale; i'm thrilled when i find those expensive cotton ones! and i like the way your shoes look like art, too, framed in the cubicles!
ReplyDeletei use free and thrifted/yard sale stuff in my own home, too!
Happy Birthday!
I have never posted a comment on your blog before, but your room is just so simple and pretty! Money cannot buy creativity. I would not be surprised to see it on Apartment Therapy.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very inspiring post for me. I have some things that I considered junk and was stressed not knowing what to do with them, but they are special to other members of my family; so I can't get rid of them. But I am rethinking now how I can display them in an interesting way. You have done a wonderful job on your room. Your husband is very blessed to have such a resourceful and creative woman (Proverbs 31 woman) for his wife. It saves him a lot of money, too!

Hi I'm a new follower and I just love your blog. I think we'd get along wonderfully... a lot of the same taste and I can be a goof ball too. Happy belated birthday!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love that you did all that with only $6.10 and your creative nature. So refreshing!
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love that you did all that with only $6.10 and your creative nature. So refreshing!
Love the room and the birthday blog (I'm new to your site). Beautiful inside and out, YOU are a gift from God and you're sharing your gifts with us. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I hate seeing "cheap" room decorating that is still upwards of $100, so your $6.10 is right up my (checkbook's) alley! and I love your observation about creativity being economical... too true!
ReplyDeleteI love the room! Decorating for me also involves mostly the creative use of what I already have. Though there are times I would love to just buy things, I don't think I would enjoy it nearly as much if I did. I love the challenge of creating what I want by coming up with unique uses from what I have.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the hats. I thought you would like the black one and blue on the best... :)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to great things from you every day.
XO,
Marta
Beautiful! Wonderful decor. I am absolutely in love with that black horse clock on your dresser....
ReplyDeletewhere the heck did you find such a gem?!
*sighs* I WANT your room! :D
ReplyDeleteBut really, well done for being so creative, it all looks fabulous!
I absolutely LOVE the frame with the necklaces on it ! I also took my closet doors off, and love the open-ness of it all! We actually have NO closet doors now...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the constant inspirations!
LOVE the hats!!! What kind of yard sales do you find those at?? How old is your house by the way? It's lovely!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! you have seriously inspired me to vamp up my room and I have a lot of fun things like you that I never thought of using. I have been in my first house now for almost a year and a half and painted my room a beautiful, what I call, Paris Blue. I want it to have a victorian feel with Cream, black and rose decor. You have inspired me to finish it. Then on to the rest of the house.
ReplyDeleteI love it. I love that it's a real house and not an uptight, perfectly decorated museum! Thanks for sharing your ideas and great finds!
ReplyDeleteLove that bedspread and those floors. Please tell me that you glued felt or non-slip rubber stuff to the bottom of the cinder blocks so that they don't ruin that gorgeous hardwood.
ReplyDeleteHaha, heavens to Betsy, yes! I'm paranoid about those floors.
ReplyDeletei love your makeover! thanks for sharing! everything you touch is beauteemous! :o)
ReplyDeleteOkay,I am totally in love with that black cloche hat!!!!
ReplyDeletemy husband stores his clothes in the coat closet! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your room!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the hat decor!
ReplyDeleteAmazing redo and super affordable! I'm in awe of your thrifty styling. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous! I love the shoe display.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog! Newest follower. =)
ReplyDeleteOoh! Your room is so pretty, I'll have to take notes! You have s much inspiration in there! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and am a new follower. ;)
I love your blog! I posted one of the photos in a feature on my blog about things I love. Just wanted to pass it on! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me the name of the paint color on your walls? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou have such creative ideas! I never thought of using a picture frame laying flat on a dresser to hold things. I LOVE that! And I like your necklaces hanging from a hanging wire on a photo frame! Great idea! I love the bed sheet drapery w/ bows! So feminine, elegant, delicate. It works! :) I collect hats too! I love your vintage umbrella seen in photo as well. Where on earth did you find one of these. I want to get one like that! :) So pretty with its ruffly edges! :) So cozy. :)
