Lace Doily Coasters
We're Celebrating MOM right now, and it's so fitting, because today's project actually came about because of motherly love!
Earlier this morning my daughter was driving me nuts, bossing me around like crazy and playing the "climb all over mommy like she's my personal jungle gym, and then let my body go limp and see if she can catch me before I hit the floor" game, over and over again, and finally, I broke down, and literally went in to my room and hid under my blankets(totally not kidding). You'll notice that I did not lock her in the basement, or sell her to gypsies. That's where the motherly love comes in.
Anyway, while under the blankets, enjoying my moment, I was thinking about coasters (naturally) and how cute they would be with a little lace doily on them.....
So here you go! I was going to call them " 'under the blankets' coasters" but I thought it had a bit of a scandalous connotation, so I opted for a less-creative title:
They feel sort of fresh like summer, and line-dried linens to me!
And they were so very easy!
You'll need:
eight 5" squares of muslin, or white cotton
four-4" squares of batting
and four-13" lengths of lace
1: Press the edges of your squares under 1/2"
2: Lay your batting inside four of the sqaures:
3: Place the other four squares on top, pin, and stitch around the edges in two rows.
4: Starting in the middle, spiral your lace around and around, with the bottom of each row tucked under the tops of the row before it.
2: Lay your batting inside four of the sqaures:
3: Place the other four squares on top, pin, and stitch around the edges in two rows.
4: Starting in the middle, spiral your lace around and around, with the bottom of each row tucked under the tops of the row before it.
5: Stitch on in a spiral pattern, so there are no edges popping up.

I know, my stitching is really uneven, sorry.
(note to self: do not attempt a tutorial while baby-sitting 6 children. Sometimes multi-tasking is not a good thing)
Wrap them up in a pretty ribbon, and give them to your mommy!
(or not, hehe!)
Then make her a cup of tea and her favorite goodies to go with them. :o)
The cheater's guide would tell you that if you use 4" felt squares instead of cotton, it would probably be just as cute, but without that terrible pressing, and matching of sides. In case you find that kind of thing tedious! :o)
See how Dana's Celebrating MOM today!
Disney! I love these! I'm thinking of these for my Aunt or Grandma! Love it!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I think you should have christened them "Under the Blankets' Coasters"! We need a little scandal in our lives! Nope, not really - just kidding! =)
ReplyDeleteL-O-V-E your ideas!
-Bess-
This is adorable! I love lace and this pattern is so easy! Thank so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteVery cute Disney! It's the uneven stitching that makes them have character! They came out great!
ReplyDeletethose are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAnd I hide from my kids, too. On the far side of my bed. One day my husband came home from work and I didn't notice until I looked up and he's standing at the foot of the bed staring at me. I told him to either take dinner prep upon himself of join me, but to NOT reveal my hiding place.
Girl! You are amazing! How can you just come up with this stuff?? Love them! Gonna try them! Me...probably will opt for felt:)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Disney I love these ! And I can actually accomplish these with no fears :) I'll be making some for my Mom for sure :)
ReplyDeleteAlso I do that too when I've had enough run and hide under my blankes :)
These are so pretty. I think they would make adorable placemats too. The lace would almost act like a charger. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteOh my! Those are gorgeous! And easy. When I saw the first picture I thought, too bad I don't have any doilies. But I don't NEED doilies! That is great!
ReplyDeleteAnother one that will have to be featured on my blog!
Beautiful! I love the cream and white color combination. :)
ReplyDeleteThose are adorable. I love your ideas.
ReplyDeleteAdorable!!! As usual!!! I LOVE these and I think my dear MIL would love them too!! Thanks SO much for all of your creative inspiration!!! Blessings!!
ReplyDeleteDisney, Sometimes I love reading your posts as much as seeing your tutorials!! I just love your honesty. I think we can all relate, sometimes I have to hide under the covers as well to prevent me for selling my children to gypsies! Love the coasters, thanks for the laugh!

Looks so easy! Thanks for the great idea.
ReplyDeleteOh Disney, these are so cute! I'm thinking that if I make these I'd be tempted to keep them for myself! I'm a mom :)
ReplyDeleteMy mom would LOVE them! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHow pretty!

If you sewed the lace on the top layer of the coaster fabric before putting them together it would hide the stitching on the back....but like the lady above said it does give it great character to flip them over and see that. Love this idea...now I have to add coasters to my list of things to sew. :P

The whole story about why you needed to hide under the covers is the reason I read what you have to say. Too funny and oh so familiar!
ReplyDeleteJessica: yes! Definitely. I actually tried it that way first, but it ended up being a little poofy, and my glass wouldn't sit very still on it :o( But for mugs it would be fine!
ReplyDeleteI really like these little coasters, they are so fresh, just so pretty. I would love to leisurely make these as gifts to have on hand... I know I would love receiving these. : )
ReplyDeleteI've been having so much fun reading and learning here. I have four daughters ages 16 to 27 and we are all enjoying gleaning from you! : ) My 24 year old just made your 20 minute skirt. So cute!
Blessings to you! ~Amelia
Yikes, these are lovely! An official non-sewer, I feel like I could actually sew these by hand. You have the knack of making the simplest things so classy.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved the look of mixing different shades of white and cream. There is something so precious about it. This is such a sweet simple project. I would love to use that idea to make some throw pillows.
ReplyDeleteso very pretty :)
ReplyDeletesoooooo cute! I will probably play with a colour combination ;p
ReplyDelete(is very reassuring to know that all moms have the same monky toddlers around us! jajaja)
Just a quick note to let you know that a link to this post will be placed on CraftCrave today [24 Apr 02:00pm GMT]. Thanks, Maria
ReplyDeleteso cute!
ReplyDeleteI adore how beautiful this is!
ReplyDeleteThese are truly adorable!!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't think about it being too poofy...makes sense now that you pointed it out. Thanks so much. LOVE your blog.
ReplyDeleteHi, hi, hi. I'm so glad you decided to collaborate with Dana, otherwise I would have never found your blog, and I would definitely be missing something! I love it, and the tutorials are great, and so it the way you write. I find myself laughing out loud with knowing and feeling sympathy at the same time. So looking forward to more.
ReplyDeleteI think these are one of the most beautiful things you've come up with! So simple but yet sooo perfect (so you maybe?) Thank you for the tuto!!
ReplyDeleteDisney this is absolutely terrific! I love it so much !!
ReplyDeleteI am so psyched that I found your site. I am totally drooling over these projects ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! So beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, they're beautiful!! Now that's a project I might trust myself trying to sew! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSheila
Do you have an Etsy store? I would buy them in a heartbeat because I cannot sew, do not have a sewing machine. Is there a no-sew version??
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with these coasters! I think I might make a set for everyone this year! Yay! Thank you for sharing your ideas.
ReplyDeleteThey would look a lot neater if you sew the lace on BEFORE you put the whole thing together - then the stitching would be sandwiched between the layers and you wouldn't see it.
ReplyDeleteI <3 your super sweet coasters. Pinned:)
